Chapter 1

The rain in Chicago was unforgiving, blurring the neon lights of the city into streaks of bleeding color. Inside The Velvet Lounge, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Irtaza Shaikh sat in the dimmest corner of the VIP section, his dark eyes scanning the room like a predator monitoring its territory. At twenty-seven, he was the undisputed kingpin of the city’s most formidable syndicate. His tailored charcoal suit hid the scars of his past, and his cold, calculating demeanor kept everyone at a distance. He was a man who dealt in blood, power, and absolute control. He didn't smile. He didn't soften.

Until the heavy oak doors of the lounge swung open, and a gust of wind brought in something entirely out of place

Her name was Mehar Khan. She was nineteen, but she carried an air of pure, unfiltered innocence that made her seem entirely untouched by the harsh realities of the world. She was soaked from head to toe, her oversized pastel-pink sweater dripping onto the polished hardwood floor. In her hands, she clutched a small, shivering stray kitten wrapped in a fluffy yellow towel.

Ignoring the imposing, armed guards at the door, Mehar marched straight into the high-end, dangerous establishment as if it were a cozy neighborhood café. Her wide, hazel eyes scanned the room, entirely missing the lethal glints of hidden firearms and the hardened expressions of the men around her. Instead, she fixed her gaze on the warmest spot in the room—the crackling fireplace right next to Irtaza’s booth

Excuse me," Mehar’s soft, sweet voice cut through the low murmur of jazz music. She stepped right up to Irtaza’s table, completely oblivious to the fact that his right-hand man, Bilal, had already reached for his holster.

Irtaza raised a single, scarred hand, halting Bilal instantly. He looked up, his icy gaze meeting her bright, childlike face.

"You're blocking the warmth, big guy," Mehar said, pouting slightly as she cradled the kitten closer to her chest. "Snowball here is freezing. Can we sit by your fire? The lady at the front desk looked mean, but you look like you have a big heater."

Bilal choked on his breath. Nobody spoke to Irtaza Shaikh like that. Nobody called him 'big guy .
